The problem there Sholum is that the NTFS partition table on his primary OS drive was corrupted. I had him boot into Debian Live for diagnostics and the drive was inaccessible. We ended up using TestDisk to pull the data off raw onto another drive

Oh well, seems I was too late to assist. For the future, it might be a good idea to keep a live-CD of an OS for data recovery (I highly recommend a Puppy Linux distro; PupRescue Precise is especially great for data recovery). All you have to do is boot into Puppy and copy your stuff to a backup drive.

Somehow that seems to be going around lately. I remember the last major Windows Update corrupted on me, so I had to manually remove the update database and let it re-construct, and ever since the updates completed, I've had a bunch of random crashes and boot errors that System Restore can't even touch, yet somehow randomly resolve themselves with reboot. I can't say for certain, but I've got a strong suspicion that Microsoft's latest updates for Windows 7 have been less about improving system stability but rather to aggressively assist Windows 10 conversion. Or enforce it. *puts on tinfoil hat*

It's looking really good right now. TestDisk is just very time consuming because it's having to read raw data without a partition table to guide it. For the first time I think I'm looking at a near 100% recovery of personal data. The OS, however, is toast, so he'll need to reinstall that.
