The word "Nigger" is actually derived from the word "Niggardly", meaning stingy with money or other resources. How it wound up applied to black people (who didn't have much money) rather than the Jewish (who were stereotypically stingy) is something of a mystery.
"Moon Cricket" has a funny backstory too.

Actually the Nigerian root for Nigger is correct. Niggardly is from a different language(and usses an "a" instead of an "e". The slang "nigger" came from the fact that slave traders were from several countries and weren't the best educated lot to start with. "Niger" was the country of origan for many slaves, uneducated people simply pronounced a hard "g". Later when more educated people wrote the slang word down they added the second g to match the spelling to the pronounciation.

"Nigger" comes from Spanish "negro", meaning black, itself from Latin "niger", meaning black. Jesus, you guys ever heard of the internet?

jumba;
Incorrect. Linguistics trace the origin of "nigger" to "Nigeria". Latin "niger" is the root for "Nigeria", what Romans called the region, pre-dating modern spanish. First recorded instances of "nigger" were during the Atlantic slave trade, occuring in English, not Spanish. What we have is "negro" and "Nigeria" having a common root, "niger", therefore "nigger" and "negro" have a common root word, "niger". So, no "nigger" didn't come from "negro"
