There could be a number of issues here. - Something trivial might have went to hell, such as a heatsink in which case the computer auto-shutoff to prevent damage to components from heat. - You could have the operating system corrupt, in which case use a OS cd to repair the operating system, if that fails introduce 3rd HD with OS to boot and extract files from HD 1&2

It's looking really good right now. TestDisk is just very time consuming because it's having to read raw data without a partition table to guide it. For the first time I think I'm looking at a near 100% recovery of personal data. The OS, however, is toast, so he'll need to reinstall that.
